Wool is a Sci-Fi novel written by Hugh Howey. It’s based in a dystopian future, at an unknown time. Earth is a wasteland, so everyone has to live in underground bunkers called silos. The location is unknown, but for the names of Silo 17 and 18. These silos have many different levels, as well as jobs. Some of these include mechanics, porters (People who carry stuff around) and the Sheriff of the silo. They’re generally split up into thirds – The up top, the mids and the down deep. The main characters are Juliet, a worker from the Mechanical sector, Bernard, the head of IT and later mayor of the silo, and Lukas, a worker in IT. There are many secondary characters such as Solo, who you will find later in the book, Holston, the sheriff at the start of the book, Deputy Marnes, the original deputy of the silo, and Mayor Jarnes, the original mayor in the book. And we can’t forget about Knox and McLain, the heads of mechanical and supply. They all appear at different times in the book, facing different problems, and for some, having different deaths.
I found the second part of the book more interesting, as the first part was a bit disjointed with all the dying. It is definitely a very good book, which I would recommend for ages 12 and up, reason being it can be hard to read at times. It’s a bit of a mix of Sci-Fi and action. There are no laser guns, but it’s set in the future. There are no spaceships, but there are gadgets and gizmos that show we are in the future. I give this book a strong 4 out of 5, because it was hard to read but really interesting. And that is the end of my book review on Wool by Hugh Howey.
