Shift is a dystopian/Sci-Fi book written by Hugh Howey. A sequel to Wool, it talks about the way the Silos came about.
It has a very interesting plot, and revisits some of the older characters from Wool. The first part of the book was about the life of the designer of the Silos. We walk through his struggles and life as he becomes more and more important and engaged in this project, which isn’t really what it seems to be. The second part is finding the answers to questions long unanswered, as well as seeing life in the Silos.
The main characters are Donald, aka Troy, the unknowing designer of the silos. Anna, his high school ex. Solo, aka Jimmy, the sole survivor of the violence in Silo 17. Thurman, the architect of the whole project. Some secondary characters include Helen, Donald’s wife. Erskine and Victor, the two who helped Thurman orchestrate this plan. Eren, the senior officer before Donald comes out for his final shift of the book. Shadow, Solo’s cat for a short period of the book. And Charlotte, Donald’s sister.
The good people of Silo 1 keep the whole operation running, and the strain it takes on them is shown in this marvellous piece of writing. It falls in the categories of Sci-Fi and Dystopian.
I would really recommend reading the first book, Wool, before you read Shift, as it gives context to what’s happening. It is a good read for ages of maybe 12 and over, as there is some violence and profanity littered throughout the book.
I would give it a solid five out of five stars, as it is written beautifully and the suspense during the book makes for a great read. And that is the end of my book review on Shift by Hugh Howey.
