Yr 8 English: Crow Country

Crow Country By Kate Constable

A gripping time-slip adventure, Crow comes from this place; this place comes from Crow and Crow has work for you.

'Sadie isn't thrilled when her mother drags her from the city to live in the country town of Boort. But soon she starts making connections - connections with the country, with the past, with two boys, Lachie and Walter, and, most surprisingly, with the ever-present crows. When Sadie is tumbled back in time to view a terrible crime, she is pulled into a strange mystery. Can Sadie, Walter and Lachie figure out a way to right old wrongs, or will they be condemned to repeat them?

About the Author

Kate Constable is the author of the acclaimed and internationally published fantasy trilogy, The Chanters of Tremaris. She has also written three realist books for teenagers as part of the highly successful Girlfriend Fiction series. Her recent fantasy for younger readers, Cicada Summer, has been short listed for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and Crow Country won the CBCA Book of the Year (Younger Readers) in 2012.

Where were you born?

I was born in Melbourne but spent my primary school years in Papua New Guinea, where my father worked as a pilot. I spent my whole childhood with my nose in books. We returned to Melbourne when I was eleven and I’ve lived here ever since.

What themes are recurring in your work?

My first love is fantasy and I love to write about magic, time travel and the supernatural. But all my books, whether fantasy or realist, tend to feature thoughtful, determined heroines. I think it’s very important to write (and read) about strong female characters and their friendships.

What have been the highlights of your career?

In 2010, “Cicada Summer” was short listed for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, the first time Children’s Fiction had been included in the awards. Also in 2010, Winter of Grace was co-winner of the Psychologists for Peace Literature Award. Several of my books have been CBC Notable Books.

Where have your works been published?

I have had short stories published in literary magazines, including “Meanjin” and “Island”. “My story The Fat Doubloons of Love” won second prize in the HQ Magazine Short Story Competition.
